Maths through Art

This is a simple craft activity where you can incorporate many mathematical concepts such as:

  • shapes: square, triangle, heart – can also talk about the properties of the different shapes e.g. the square has 4 equal sides, 4 corners…
  • colors
  • counting & number recognition: children can count how many buttons are there (e.g. all the buttons or red buttons only…) and they can find the corresponding number on for example printed number flashcards – in that way, one would be able to revise number recognition too.

Salt Dough Hand Print

The salt dough can also be made by the children: encourage the children to fill the cups using a teaspoon/table spoon. Children can also be encouraged to mix the dough using a tablespoon – be careful that the water is not too hot.

Ingredients for the Salt Dough:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • powder glitters – optional

In a bowl, mix the salt and the flour. Add the warm water in slowly and combine… should have the consistency of a dough. You can also add some glitters at this stage. Add a little water if it becomes dry, or a little flour if the dough is sticky.

  • Once the dough is ready, roll it until about 1 cm thick.
  • Press your child’s hand/feet in the center.
  • Make a hole near the top of the dough – can use a straw.
  • Carefully turn the salt-dough over, and write any information such as your child’s name, age, date… makes a great keepsake.
  • Leave it to dry in the sun for a least 24 hrs.
  • You can leave it as it is, or children can paint it, with paint.
  • Leave it to dry again.
  • Hang the ribbon and Enjoy.
