Fathers Day

Things I love about dad/grandpa…

Below is a very simple activity, you can make from craft sticks / popsicle sticks. If you do not have such sticks, you can also write them on a piece of paper. This is a great activity where children get to think about different things that they like about their dad/grandpa … It is also a great literacy activity where children will be exposed to print (letters) and they will start to understand that print carries a meaning (print can be read).

Recipes

Colored Rice/Pasta

Dear parents, below, you can find an easy recipe of how you can do some colored rice, which can be used as a base for sensory play. You can also do it with your children.

All you need is:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 tsp vinegar
  • food coloring
  • Ziplock bag or any other plastic bag or container
  • Place the rice and food coloring (few drops) in a bag or container and mix well.
  • Add the vinegar and mix well again until the rice is covered with food coloring (you might choose to add more food coloring depending on the color that you want to achieve)
  • Place the colored rice in a dish that is covered with a baking sheet (cartaforno), so that the food coloring wont stain the dish.
  • Leave the rice in the sun for a couple of hours so that it dries.
  • Repeat the same process to do more colors.

Play dough Recipe

Dear parents, some of you have been asking me to give you a play dough fail-proof recipe. So, I am going to give you the recipe that I normally use.

You will need:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar – can easily be bought from the supermarket
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • food coloring

Instruction:

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and cream of tartar and mix well.
  • In a pot, mix the food coloring with the water. Then add the vegetable oil and mix together again.
  • Add the dry ingredient in the pot and mix well.
  • Cook over low to medium heat until the dough starts to form and become dry. It is important that you mix the contents so that they wont stick with the pot.
  • Once it starts to form a ball together and looks fully cooked, take off the heat. Let the dough cool first before you touch it – it might take a few minutes to cool down.
  • Once cool, knead the dough for 5 minutes to make the dough soft.
  • It is important that you store the play dough in an airtight container when not being used.
